Police found the woman's body around 8 p.m. in the 1500 block of East 65th Street, said police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines.

The woman, 46, suffered traumatic head injuries and Calumet Area police detectives are investigating the death as a homicide, police said.

The woman -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as Barbara Ann Smith -- was found by her brother in a bathroom in the apartment. She had apparently been bludgeoned to death, police said.

Relatives forced their way into the apartment and found her on the floor, police said.

No one was in custody Tuesday morning.
