Man Parachuting Off High-Rise In Loop Arrested

CHICAGO (STMW) – A far southwest Ottawa man was arrested after parachuting off a skyscraper under under construction early Sunday in the Loop.

About 2:40 a.m. a Central District patrol officer was near a construction site at 117 W. Wacker Dr. when he heard a “loud popping sound,’’ according to police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. “He looked around and he sees an individual floating down onto Wacker Drive.”

After he landed on the ground, the officer made sure the man, 44-year-old Shaun Walters, was not hurt and he placed Walters under arrest, Mirabelli said.

Walters had apparently parachuted off the building under construction at the Wacker address, which is planned for 90-stories.

“The officer took proactive actions to prevent danger to himself, nearby pedestrians and vehicular traffic,’’ Mirabelli said. “It (parachuting) does pose a very serious danger.”

Walters, of the 3200 block of East 1969 Rd. in Ottawa, Ill., was charged with one count of reckless conduct, a misdemeanor, according to Mirabelli.

Walters is scheduled to appear May 17 in Misdemeanor Court (Br. 43-4), at 1:30 p.m. It was not known immediately why he was parachuting.

Surely, the cop who “took proactive actions to prevent danger to himself” was actually more of a danger to this parachutist than anything else. It’s more likely that the cop pummeled the guy than “making sure he wasn’t hurt.” Can you imagine how ticked a cop would be seeing this go down on his shift? It’s a power thing. Lame.

The cop who “took proactive actions to prevent danger to himself” So that means the cop ran and hid till the guy was on the ground??

Society is NUTS! Attempted suicide is criminally prosecuted. An ill convict to be executed is diligently healed in preparation for his killing. An act of stupidly risking breaking YOUR OWN neck -not somebody else’s- is punishable by law, therefore you must be handcuffed like a violent criminal and thrown in jail.

“It (parachuting) does pose a very serious danger.” At 2:40 am? If the cop was in his car focusing on the road he wouldn’t have even noticed this guy. What was he doing? Cops should be patrolling dangerous areas of the city at 2:40 am instead of the corner of Wacker Drive and LaSalle. Anyway, what’s more frightening is that there is a major construction site in downtown Chicago with NO SECURITY.

Larry, moe and Booby are rim jobs. Just another chance to break balls on cops. The same people who would give their lives for you if the ship hit the fan.

Society is Nuts? You’re nuts there Roger… If someone wants to break their own neck, let them! Why do people always stick their nose in other people’s business? Did the parachutist affect you? NO. Was it jeopardizing any one’s safety? At 2:40 AM… probably not. Yell at the guy, cut holes in his parachute so he can’t do it again and let him walk home. At 2:40 PM.. Definitely a problem… arrest warranted.

There is no reason to bash cops over this… not their fault society is Nuts and wants to arrest everyone for silly things.

    Bobby is right, no security????
