Gary Mayor Rudy Clay Has Prostate Cancer, Ends Campaign

GARY, Ind. (WBBM) -- A diagnosis of prostate cancer is forcing the mayor of Gary to suspend his campaign for re-election--less than a month before voters go to the polls in Northwest Indiana.

Mayor Rudy Clay says he's taking the advice of his doctors, Newsradio 780's Craig Dellimore reports.

Clay, 75, first won election as mayor in 2007 and was planning to seek a second term.

In a statement, Clay said he owes it to his family and the people of Gary to step aside

He doctors advised him to seek a less-demanding schedule to avoid further harm to his health.

Clay called the decision difficult but that maintaining his health is a top priority.

The primary election is May 3. Nine Democrats are running to replace Clay. The winner of that Democratic primary is nearly certain to win the November general election in the largely Democratic city.
