Boy, 16, Killed In South Side Drive-By

CHICAGO (STMW)-- A 16-year-old boy was shot dead in a drive-by shooting Thursday afternoon in the Southwest Side Little Village neighborhood.

The teen suffered a gunshot wound to the chest about 4 p.m. in the 4200 block of West 28th Street and later died from his injuries, police said.

A vehicle with several occupants was seen fleeing the scene but no one was in custody Thursday evening, police said.

The victim was identified as Omar Mendez, 16, of 2722 S. Pulaski Rd., the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Mendez suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospial at 4:44 p.m., the office said.

The shooting is less than a mile away from where 16-year-old Arturo Santana, Jr. was stabbed to death Wednesday evening. Police say his stabbing in the 2600 block of South Ridgeway Avenue was gang-related.

Harrison Area detectives are investigating the homicide.
