Man Fatally Struck While Trying To Cross Eisenhower Expy.

CHICAGO (STMW) - A homeless man was fatally struck by an SUV Friday night while trying to walk across the Eisenhower Expressway on the West Side apparently to get to the car he was living in, state police said.

About 9:50 p.m., Gary Harris, 50, for unknown reasons, was attempting to cross the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) at Central Avenue, according to Illinois State Police District Chicago Master Sergeant Joe Stangl. Apparently Harris lived in a car on the other side of the expressway, the master sergeant said.

While Harris was in the left center lane he was struck by an eastbound Honda CR-V sport utility vehicle, Stangl said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:34 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The driver of the CR-V immediately stopped, Stangl said. The driver was not impaired and no citations were issued.
