Man Fatally Struck While Trying To Cross Eisenhower Expy.

CHICAGO (STMW) – A homeless man was fatally struck by an SUV Friday night while trying to walk across the Eisenhower Expressway on the West Side apparently to get to the car he was living in, state police said.

About 9:50 p.m., Gary Harris, 50, for unknown reasons, was attempting to cross the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) at Central Avenue, according to Illinois State Police District Chicago Master Sergeant Joe Stangl. Apparently Harris lived in a car on the other side of the expressway, the master sergeant said.

While Harris was in the left center lane he was struck by an eastbound Honda CR-V sport utility vehicle, Stangl said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:34 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The driver of the CR-V immediately stopped, Stangl said. The driver was not impaired and no citations were issued.

There are so many homeless people living in their vehicles,,,the park etc,,,What I can’t stand is that people are suffering these days. We never know to what point that we will be living in our cars,,or in the parks,,,unless you have been homeless before,,THINK,,,This gentleman was still a human being and had a life,,,so who are we to think stupidly about another life, especially when it is gone..although he had to have family somewhere,,,Prayers are still to them in hoping that they will understand life is only lived once,,,,,RIP…Gary….God loved you best!

  • shouldnt have been standing there gary

Dead bumb.. whos going to pay for that car damage?

  • Jakeem

Would you guys make these same posts if it was your own family member?

  • Reggie

Yes, I would say my dead bum brother got killed while walking across the expressway and he wasn’t always the sharpest tool in the box. And the I would ponder what would have happened had he never got introduced to crack, or ran with theotis and randelle and got busted and sent to Pontiac, and I also feel bad for his 11 kids that he doesn’t see or support.

Yeah, I would talk the same about my family

Poor or not….it is stupid to cross the expressway. He could’ve gotten a few more people killed.

I often spoke to this man . He was nice polite and struggled with drugs. I often wonder what turns a life so backwards . Do think he wanted to grow up to a homeless junkie? I hope he find the peace that was missing in this life

well i have spoken to this man a few times as well, he was a friend of my father and he was nice man struggling with drugs, but that dont mean be disrespectful becuz he was a person and maybe someone father…… he wasnt that homeless anyway he had a little trailer like with lights and everything else he might needed in there
