DEERFIELD (CBS) — Michael P. Ditka, the son of former Chicago Bears player and head coach Mike Ditka, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on Wednesday in Deerfield, police said.

Deerfield Police observed a black Hummer H3 located in a parking lot at the Deerfield Township Building, 601 Deerfield Road, with its lights turned off around 11:50 p.m. When the officer approached the car, Ditka stepped out from the driver’s side, and according to the officer, had a strong smell of alcohol on his breath.

After failing several field sobriety tests,, Ditka was arrested for DUI.

According to the police report, Ditka argued that he wasn’t driving the vehicle. He was released after posting $100 cash bond and a court date is set for May 11.

What is wrong with sleeping it off in a parking lot? Leave the guy alone.

    • Tanya Livingston

Because that Hummer had to be driven to the lot; circustantially, that would be by Mr. Ditka. The law in Illinois is clear…Did he have actual physical control or even consttructive control over the vehicle. One can be cited for DUI even with a non-running vehicle. Sorry.

    • John R

Exactly! He had enough common sense to get off the road. Sheez, why don’t the cops just stick us up and take our money?

      • Sonny

Boy you don’t get it…The thing about being drunk…Your mind changes. If your mind is smart enough to pull over—it (the Mind) has the same chance to get back to the same mentality when he started driving. Besides even if he was sleeping it off, when he woke up—he probibly wasn’t good enough to drive anyway. Commend him for pulling over, but if he was smart he would have left the vehicle. That is the problem with drinking—when you are drunk, you just aren’t that smart. They couldn’t run the risk of Ditka driving away 10 mins later. Come on now.

  • mr. me.

Phsical control alone will get you a DUI. He should have been driving DA Car.

  • Jimmy

If someone is in the driver’s seat and within hand reach of the keys that is DUI according to Illinois Law.

  • Jim

Please take a look at the Safekey System device, this device interlocks your engine. It is not a breathalizer. This would help Mr. Ditka.

the cbs people woudn`t let anyone see my comment, how fair was that!

  • Zarathrusta

He’s a drunk just like his old man.

  • MARK

THEY STOPPED HIM BECAUSE HE IS WHITE. IF HE WERE BLACK THEY WOULD JUST GIVE HIM A WARNING AND LET HIM GO. TIMES ARE CHANGING. AND WHEN THEY FOUND OUT IT WAS DITKA’S SON., THEY WERE OVERJOYED. THE LAW IS SIMPLE. DONT DRINK AND DRIVE.

  • Monica

Seriously – that is Ditka’s son? Wow!

  • MaryVee

I’m grateful to the officer that got him., I would hate to be driving the same road with a jerk with blood alcohol over twice the legal limit as reported. And in a huge Hummer to boot. Dangerous moron.
