Bears Take Cal Safety With Third Round Pick

CHICAGO (CBS) The Chicago Bears selected Chris Conte, a safety from California, with their third round draft pick.

A former cornerback, Conte ran a 4.52 40-yard dash at the NFL’s Scouting Combine and recorded 18 reps on the bench press at 225 pounds. He’s listed as 6-foot-3 and 212-pounds.

In four seasons at Cal, the Los Angeles native had 152 tackles, two forced fumbles and two interceptions.

The Bears selected Conte with the 29th pick in the third round, it was the 93rd overall pick.

Wouldn’t mind a little analysis; I can easily look up his biography.

  • Gabriel Green

I think Cannon would have been a better pick.

  • Wild West Bear Fan

Cannon has unspecified medical issues. Mike Mayock liked conte as a late riser in the draft. Loved his game against Oregon. Was a corner, switched to saftey in senior year, really blossomed, ended up All PAC 10 Saftey. Looks like a typical Angelo pick, he has at least 1 every year High risk – moderate reward, big potential to bust. Hoping for the best!!

Why draft another safety? They needed a corner to replace Tillman, or a big wide reciever that will go up and get the ball. They also needed more offensive and defensive line help. They could have got Chris Conte as an undrafted free agent. I hate this pick!

  • Chuck

This is the day the Bears need to get a big, speedy physical wide reciever I commend them on the first three needs I would/ve picked a WR in the 3rd round but hopefully the 4th rd will be it

  • Andy Armstrong

Angelo Does it again, First two Picks Nice but the third you could of gotten Him at the 5th round, You should of picked up a OG with your O line is shambles.
How Does a team that allows more sacks in the NFL not protect your QB better than this. IDIOT you are ranked 30 in total Yards and 23 in total o stats. You need a better Offense

  • RealRick

Well, I should have known it was too good to last.

After seeing Good Jerry take two very good picks in the first and second rounds, and not to mention seeing a surprising Strong Jerry telling both the Ravens and the NFL to pound sand, we are, sadly, back to Bad Jerry again.

And Bad Jerry just WASTED the Bears 3rd round pick on a player who does not fit an area of need and who would be available as an undrafted free agent once the labor impasse gets resolved, hopefully, sometime this year.

Is it too much to ask to have a great GM who knows how to run an orgainzation?

Look at how New England keeps stockpiling picks this year and next. Look how they draft a QB–young enough to gradually bring him up to learn their system and someday replace Tom Brady. Compare that with how the Bears, Martz in particular, threw Caleb Hanie under the bus after being embarrassed in the NFC Championship.

This franchise desperately needs a housecleaning and new management at every level.

PLEASE, PLEASE, may he tackle better than Steltz.

  • StupidPeopleFTW

If people really think we dont need help at safety, you should probably go buy a TV.

  • Jaimie in Hoffman Estates

Great another Craig Stelz, dosen’t angelo get it he is bad at drafting Safetys!! What is this the 7th year in a row that the Bears drafted a safety? Bad pick!!
