WASHINGTON (AP)– After a scandal that involved apparent illegal campaign contributions and inappropriate spending, the Fiesta Bowl will be allowed to remain part of the Bowl Championship Series, though it must pay a $1 million fine.

The BCS presidential oversight committee made the decision Wednesday, which allows the Fiesta Bowl to continue to be part of the system for deciding a college football national champion.

Besides the fine, the committee attached several other conditions to its ruling, including steps to strengthen supervision of the bowl so the same problems are not repeated.

A recent internal report by the Fiesta Bowl detailed reimbursements to employees for political donations, along with lavish and inappropriate spending.

The BCS said it was “deeply troubled” by the findings, and concluded that the Fiesta Bowl board failed in its oversight responsibilities.
