NBC 5 Sportscaster Daryl Hawks Found Dead In Atlanta Hotel Room

CHICAGO (CBS) — A sports broadcaster for NBC 5 in Chicago, on assignment for tonight’s NBA playoff game between the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks, was found dead in a hotel room in Atlanta on Thursday.

The body of Daryl Hawks was discovered around 9:30 a.m. Hotel employees went to his room after he missed the Bulls’ morning shooting practice, and he was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

NBC 5 News Vice President Frank Whittaker informed the newsroom of Hawk’s death this morning. The circumstances surrounding his death are not yet known, but sources said there were no apparent signs of foul play.

Hawks, 38, joined NBC in Chicago in July 2008 as a sports anchor and reporter. He was a three-time Emmy nominee, according to his bio on nbcchicago.com. According to the website, Hawks was married with three children.

In 2002, NBC 5 sports reporter Darrian Chapman died of a heart condition at the age of 37.

  • The Truth

    Sad news.

Did he used to play football? Seems like a lot of ex-athletes die young. Might be worthy of a whole health risk category of its own.

    • West Town Tom

Yes, he reportedly played semi-pro football and worked out a lot to this day. But another ex-footballer dies young. Yikes. But, here’s one article a quick Google search found: http://ajs.sagepub.com/content/35/10/1674.abstract

The stronger adverse health relationship is probably his being an african-american–heart problems. Hopefully we’ll find out what the cause was.

      Tragic all-around, though.

    RIP remembered neva forgotten

  • Edie

We are so sorry to hear of his departure. Such a young person is dead? Where is he at now? Heaven, hell, or purgatory? We want to know the over yonder years or even ages to come. What will become of all of us?
May be he had a heart condition like so many basketball players have. They do not tell the coach about their conditions and then they die on the field.
Our deep condolences on this sad article. May God have him on his side and give rest for ever and ever.

  • Matthew

He was such a great sportscaster. He always seemed so happy and easy going. It is so sad that he is gone at such a young age. RIP Daryl.

  • Nina

My heart is filled with tears for the loss of Daryl Hawks; such a talented and engaging young man. I would always stay up a little later just to hear his commentary on the Chicago Bulls …. a sports team he was sooooo proud of and passionate about. My prayers go out to his family and the NBC News family. May God Bless You All.

  • Eric

I’ll never forget when Dan McNeil called him the worst sportscaster in the city. Daryl Hawks called in and was so classy about speaking about the rankings and then said the words that made me like him even more, “I’m a former Marine!” and I was hooked. Even that day McNeil walked away with a newfound respect for Daryl Hawks and I followed him ever since.

From one former Marine to another I say Semper Fi to you Daryl and you will be missed. Tears are coming down my face as I type this because it hurts to see someone gone who you can tell had a genuine love for what they did.

My son Ron, a photog at NBC,just got back from Atlanta on Monday after working with Daryl last weekend covering the Bulls. He and Ron had such a great time. My family wishes our deepest sympathy to his family. Such a fine person. He will be missed!
