Plainfield Homes Evacuated, School Placed On Lockdown

UPDATED 05/17/11 4:50 p.m.

PLAINFIELD (CBS) — Will County Sheriff’s Police have surrounded a home in the Plainfield area because they say a man inside may be armed.

Will County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Ken Kaupas tells Newsradio 780’s Steve Miller that homes in the area were evacuated.

It was a call to 911 from the university police officer’s concerned wife that brought in authorities, says Kaupas.

Kaupas says three schools were told to keep students inside. Those schools located near the home – on Lakeridge Street in the Lakewood Falls subdivision in the Plainfield area.

Kaupas says by 2 p.m., the situation was under control.

He says no shots were fired and the man was not arrested but was taken to a hospital’s mental health unit to be evaluated.

Kaupas says the man is a police officer at a university located in Chicago.

I wonder if this guy is sitting in a bar somewhere sipping a cold beer. Wouldn’t that make the police look foolish?

  • Get a Clue

Foolish? Better safe than sorry. At least they are not on their a$$es and throwing stabs like you.

  • Paul Sedlacek

    Your an ass!

  • tired of stupid people

    no Paul your an ass…..

  • Doreen

This is a very weak report. “man may be armed” So what? We still have the right to bear arms in this country. And, he was in his house. Was he threatening someone?

    • ginger

I have a 9 year old that attends one of the schools in the area. I am glad they locked the school down. At least I knew that my child and other’s children were safe.

      • Janet Larrew

I agree with you, the man has a right to carry a gun only if he is mently fit. The police wouldnt have had to be there if they guy had not threatened safty. The children should be able to go to school safe. The gun wasnt the problem Thank God the kidds are safe. The man ws unstable so actions to protect had to be set in place.

    • Mr. Justice

@ Doreen, you are correct. Unless the man was suicidal or threatening others, he has the right to wear a firearm inside his home if he wants. The article is very poorly reported, but then that might be the only information they had at the time. I doubt the children in schools were at risk. The comments by Dan are illogical. Unless a threat was made, the resident has the right to wear a firearm.

      • Mr. Justice

Here we go again, the “anti-gun” supporters come out and dumb comments. It is not the guns that do “evil” things, it is the individual. At the time of this article, there was not a lot of information. We, will not, allow anyone to take away our 2nd Amendment Rights. I am glad all the children in these schools are safe. BUT, please do not say dumb a$$ comments for gun control. There are already laws on the books. @MyAimIsTrue, I like your name on here.

There you go mgd, if it is this situation that makes a great argument for gun control, no better place than to start with the police. This was a police officer who is not only afforded the right on his property, but on the streets as well. Just think, you would probably have an easier time disarming the police, since you know that they are armed. Then you could go after the law-abiding, and then you could take a stab at the criminal.

        Good Luck!

I happen to live in the neighborhood, and I have children that go to 2 out of the 3 schools that were on lockdown. From what I understand this man was threatening his wife, his home, his children’s schools (the same ones my children attend), and his own life. I have to agree with Dan and say thank goodness they prepare for a worst case scenario. I think the police and the school district did exactly the right things when handling the situation. My children are home sleeping safely in their beds, and I am thanking God because it may have turned out much differently. Those that criticize obviously don’t remember all of the school shooting, etc. that go on. In my opinion, it is situations like this one that make a great arguement for gun control!

    • dan

They only go by what they are told and you always prepare and be ready for the worst scenario…..What they did was correct by protecting the children in those schools with the lock downs…..trouble is no matter what was done there still will be those that will complain and criticize ….All those that do that didn’t have a child in one of those schools….I DID and I think they did a FABULOUS job
