Rep. Paul Ryan Takes Shots At Jay Cutler

CHICAGO (CBS) — U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has gained nationwide attention for his ultraconservative budget plan, but now, he’s also gaining attention among Bears fans for taking some shots at Jay Cutler.

CBS Sports’ Andy Benoit reports Ryan recently delivered a speech at the Economic Club of Chicago, and Fox News Channel reported his icebreaker for the evening was, “I want to thank you all for inviting me to speak. It was especially gracious of you to host me, even though I’m a Packers fan and I assume most of you are Bears fans. But that doesn’t mean we can’t work together. As chairman of the House Budget Committee, I stand ready to do whatever it takes to help you re-sign Jay Cutler.”

He continued that he had come to talk about the economy, and “the need for four quarters of strong, consistent performance. That wasn’t another Jay Cutler joke, I swear. It could be, but it’s not.”

Benoit has doubts about whether Ryan is really an “educated fan.”

“The last dig at Cutler was a clever reference to the NFC Championship knee injury controversy, but any common fan is still aware of that story,” Benoit wrote Tuesday night. “Ryan’s first dig is more enigmatic. He mentions re-signing Cutler, which isn’t a relevant issue given that Cutler is signed through 2013. But to say you’re a Packers fan and you’re willing to do all you can to help the Bears re-sign Cutler could be a veiled way of saying ‘Cutler stinks.’”

  • Mr. Justice

You are an idiot! It was a joke you moron. One does not make comments such as yours, unless they are mentally ill. By the way, I AM NOT a Packers Fan. I am a Bear’s fan.

    • StupidPeopleFTW

You’re an idiot for responding to an obvious troll post. Use your brain, report it, and move on.

  • jacpurg

    Slow news day… He’s a politician and a Packers fan… Need I say more?

  • Larry Horse's water trough

Paul Ryan is a dirtbag. But then again, so are 99.9999999% of all politicains. But Ryan has perfected being a dirtbag.

  • outraged

It was a JOKE!!! Lighten up! And Cutler does stink! Lol!

If you have to add LOL to the end of your own statement, it means it’s not very funny.

  • Meatless Meatball

I think Ryan’s a naive fool, but that’s big-time crossing a line. Go away and don’t come back.

  • Spoon

So he starts out a meeting of people he needs support from, to work together efficiently, by insulting the local football team’s QB… not once, but multiple times. How does someone this stupid get elected to office?

    Oh, right, he’s from Wisconsin.

  • Paul Ryan

I had a meeting with Wisconsin cancer survivors, I started the meeting by walking in with my Rodgers jersey, walking right past them and out the door. I dont understand what the big deal is here.

  • Bingo Brown

I can deal with someone putting down Jay because at times he really isn’t very good, but if you don’t know a group of people and you’re trying to start things on a positive note this is not the way to do it. I imagine he heard crickets, unless maybe people felt awkward enough to chuckle. It reminds me of one of my roommates, and almost every other packer fan, they talk trash about your team even though you didn’t initiate any sort of negative initiative towards the packers. It’s usually about: how bad your team sucks, how Rodgers will “rip your defense apart”, and some nonsense about Clay Matthews. When they lose: excuse, excuse, excuse, excuse. “BS penalties! half our team is injured! the other team got lucky!” instead of accepting the fact that the packers just sucked that game.
I know this comment is a little off topic, but I guess it’s just an observation of how packers fans behave, and apparently politicians are no different.

    • Spoon

Couldnt agree more with the first part, but I dont think the Packers are alone in the 2nd part of that. Pretty much every fan base holds the same stupid approach, even the Lions fans think they should have won almost every game last year.

      • Bingo Brown

I agree, everyone makes excuses, but most other fan bases aren’t set on talking trash incessantly before the game no matter who the opponent is. My roommate, who I mentioned, CONSTANTLY made excuses after a loss even though he had been talking serious trash before the game. No exceptions. I’ve noticed this with other packer fans too. Don’t complain that everything was perfect except that the: refs, fate, and pre-existing injuries lost you a particular game. Complain about how so-and-so didn’t make tackles, catches, or interceptions and so forth.
I know everyone makes their excuses, but don’t act like your team had the game stolen from them after every loss. As for lions fans, meh, they can complain all they want hahaha

  • stucky

another right-wing whack job he should have brought Trump with him

  • RealRick

Ryan will do or say ANYTHING to try to change the subject from his Medicare disaster, which has put his own seat, as well as the Repub House majority, in jeopardy for 2012.
