Four Dead, Nine Wounded In Weekend Violence In Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Four people were killed and at least nine others wounded in shootings across the city between Friday evening and early Monday, while a fifth person died in a suburban shooting.

In a period of a little more than an hour late Friday into early Saturday, two 16-year-old boys were killed in separate shootings.

An argument led to gunfire about 10:46 p.m. Friday on the street at 117th and LaSalle streets, police said.

The incident began when two teens -- 16 and 19 -- got into a verbal altercation with at least one other person, who pulled a handgun, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said.

The 16-year-old, identified as Markell Stribling of the 11000 block of South Yale Avenue., suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Roseland Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:35 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The 19-year-old was shot in the leg and taken in "stable" condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Gaines said.

Just over an hour later, a gunman came out from an alley and opened fire on a 16-year-old boy on the West Side, fatally wounding him.

About 12:03 a.m. Saturday the victim was standing on the sidewalk at Leamington and LeMoyne when a male with a gun emerged from an alley and opened fire, a report from police said.

The victim, identified as Terrance Boyd, according to the medical examiner's office, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, according to police.

A 32-year-old man died and a 17-year-old boy was wounded in another shooting Friday evening in the West Side Garfield Park neighborhood.

At 6:25 p.m., the two walked into Loretto Hospital and said they had been shot in the 4700 block of West Van Buren Street, Gaines said.

The boy was in good condition with a gunshot wound to the arm, police said.

The man -- Henry Taylor, 32, of an unknown home address-- suffered from multiple gunshot wounds and was transferred to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m.

Also Friday evening, a 9-year-old boy was wounded in a drive-by shooting in the Southwest Side Marquette Park neighborhood. Police are looking for two people who were in a reddish car involved in the shooting.

The child was shot about 7:15 p.m. in the 2500 block of West 72nd Street, police said. The shots came from a car that was red or maroon in color, police said. Inside the car were a male and a female.

The boy was shot in the back and taken to Holy Cross Hospital in "stable" condition. He was later transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Perez said.

The violence continued into the morning Saturday. About 4:15 a.m. a man, believed to be about 32, was shot multiple times in the back and arm in the 3000 block of West Fullerton Avenue. He was in stable condition at Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center.

Four people -- two men and two women -- were shot while standing outside on the South Side early Sunday. None of the injuries was reported to be serious.

The shooting happened on the 300 block of East 60th Street about 12:50 a.m., according to police. The four were standing outside when they heard shots ring out and they were struck by gunfire, police said.

A 31-year-old man suffered a gunshot to the leg and was taken to Provident Hospital of Cook County in good condition, the report said. An 18-year-old man was shot in the leg and was in good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

A 28-year-old woman suffered a gunshot to the shoulder and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition was stable, police said. A 29-year-old woman suffered a gunshot to the arm, but refused medical attention and told emergency responders she would take herself to a hospital.

A man was shot and killed near a corner store in the Lawndale neighborhood Sunday night on the West Side.

Police found the man about 8:10 p.m. lying in the street with a gunshot wound near North Pulaski and West Arthington, said police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro, citing preliminary information.

The man -- identified by the medical examiner's office as Antwaun Price, 40, the 3800 block of West Polk Street -- was standing outside the Daily Corner Grocery Store at 921 S. Pulaski Rd. when the shooters approached, then chased him as he ran away, a Harrison District police lieutenant said.

He was shot in the back and collapsed, the lieutenant said. Police believe the man was the intended target of the attack. Price was pronounced dead at 8:43 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the medical examiner's office.

Early Monday a man was shot in the abdomen on the South Side.

Officials at the University of Chicago Hospitals contacted police about 3:20 a.m. after the man, who had a gunshot wound to the abdomen, was dropped off by friends at the hospital, police said.

The man, an adult of an unknown age, later told police he was shot near 61st and Wabash. He was listed in "stable" condition early Monday.

The weekend's violence was not contained to the city. A 33-year-old Harvey man died Friday from a shooting in the south suburb.

Dwan Jones suffered multiple gunshot wounds at 15451 Honore Ave. in Harvey, according to the medical examiner's office. Jones, of the 15000 block of South Wood St., was pronounced dead at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey at 5:17 p.m. Friday.
