CHICAGO (CBS) – The NBA on Monday fined Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah $50,000 for hurling profanity and a gay slur at a fan during the Bulls’ Game 3 loss to the Miami Heat.

Noah had immediately apologized for the slur and said he expected a stiff financial penalty for his words.

“I got caught up. A fan said something,” Noah said after Sunday’s game. “I said something back. I apologize. I don’t mean no disrespect to anybody.”

As Noah sat on the bench he appeared to yell at a fan: “F– you, f**got.”

At 670 the score, sports pundits on Monday talked about how the term, along with the word “gay,” is often used by players as an insult not necessarily referring to sexual orientation.

But one gay-rights advocate doesn’t buy that argument.

“I don’t think these players understand the full extent of the words they are saying,” Jeremy Gottschalk of Equality Illinois says.

He says a sincere apology by players and firm action by managers is what ultimately helps drive home the point the term is hurtful and insulting.

“They’ve got millions of fans on TV and radio, and they have a huge platform, and they play a role in changing the conversation,” Gottschalk says.

The Bulls have agreed to work with Equality Illinois on sensitivity.

Los Angeles’ Lakers star Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 for shouting a gay slur at a referee earlier in the season. And last week, Phoenix Suns president and CEO Rick Welts revealed he was gay, a rare acknowledgement for someone holding a prominent position in men’s sports.

Also weighing in Monday was Cubs co-owner Laura Ricketts, who is openly gay. She called Noah’s slur hurtful but said she believes his apology is sincere.

“Slurs of anyone’s sexual orientation are just as harmful and derogatory as insulting one’s race, creed or ethnicity,” Ricketts said in a written statement.

Information from the Associated Press contributed to this report.

instead of getting angry, work on making a layup. the guy has hands of stone. no touch.

  • Gemini612

People that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones!

B-ball fan….I lived in Miami for 22 years and have friends and family that still live there. I love that city but I can also tell you that there are alot of classless thugs that live there too! Was it wrong….yes! But you can’t judge someone simply because he was provoked. People need to respect each other on both ends!

  • MiamiGal

How about the ignorant and annoying fans that provoke players get “suspended for life” from attending anymore games. That seems about fair.

  • bigred chi-fan

we all say thing when we are mad, like u have not said thing to some when u was mad, RA,B-BALLFAN,JEFE.For u to say he is classless thug are u saying all black men are thugs that play ball.

    • BBallGal

Big Red he said NOTHING about race. C’mon, quit using race as a crutch!!!

      • NWA

Wait one damn minute! Isn’t this the forum where race is used all the damn time? Isn’t this the place (Chicago) where race is always in the forefront?

        S.O.S.

  • Patrick Crawford

umm..its because most of them are classless thugs…

  • JeSC

I’d like to see him show some respect for the English language: no more double negatives, please!

  • Tony

How could it have been a gay slur, if he didn’t know the person’s sexual orientation to begin with? It was nothing more than a slang term that the fan deserved.

  • David

Why apologize? He was provoked, the fan didn’t apologize.

  • Jason C.

Why should he apologize? Because he’s a multi-million dollar paid PROFESSIONAL representing an NBA Franchise. I’m a poorly paid Paramedic in the South Suburbs and when some of my patients hurl out racial or sexuality slurs at me, I have to grin and bear it. Why? Because I’m a Healthcare professional and I represent the department I work for. Period.

Noah needs to be disciplined harshly by the NBA regardless of whether this is the playoffs or not. Yes he got caught up in the moment HOWEVER these guys are paid big bucks as PROFESSIONALS and their standard of behavior is to be expected above all. Suspend him for one game and a fine would be fitting. It is the profanity and slur that is the issue not the playoffs. The REACTION of the NBA will show whether they can back up their stance. Bulls need to discipline him also. I expect almost 100 % negative response but let’s put a stop to all this immaturity in the NBA. Would be a good start.

    • OLD VET

SMOOTH ; GOOD WAY OF PUTTING IT !! TODAYS SPORTS PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE THE MANNERS OR LOOKS TO HAVE OUR KIDS WANT TO BE A SPORTS STAR WHEN THEY GROW UP ! IN MY DAY THERE WAS NO LONG HAIR ,AND TATOOS ALL OVER SPORTS STARS. NO FILTHY LANGUAGE USED AGAINST EACH OTHER OR FANS EITHER ! DID FANS GET THEM MAD TOO, YES BUT THEY HAD ENOUGH BRAINS AND MANNERS TO IGNORE THAT IDIOT IN THE STANDS THAT WAS PROBABLY DRUNK FROM TOO MUCH BEER, AND JUST WENT BACK TO BEING A GOOD PERSON WORTH ENVYING !!

  • Richard R

I can say the NBA and David Stern will not worry about it being the playoffs when they hand down the punishment to Joakim Noah. What Joakim did was wrong and shows his immaturity, but the NBA will not and should not take this kind of action from a professional lightly. I see him getting suspended for 2 games and a heavy fine out of this.

  • Christopher

Coming from a guy who wears his hair up in a bun

    • Richard R

Chris and your point might be what……..

  • Tracey

    shut up!

  • Jerry O Henderson

    Attn Smooth.
I do not care how much ,NOAH IS PAID,,the fact is he does not have to KISS THE FANS a##,this is not slavery. It”s A## H##ES, like you that causes these problems anyway because you are not making this kind of money. There is no reason to be a player hater.Old by the way, does the fact he is not a full-blooded redneck, means he not supposed to speak up?

    • smooth

Attn’ Jerry Henderson Your analysis of the entire scenario is so absurd that a response is not even warranted. Behavior, Accountability, professionalism is obviously lacking in your definition of “Speaking UP” If Noah believed what he said, why did he feel a need to apologize? Get a life Jerry H

  • me

first of all that word is fairly interchangeable with calling someone an “a–hole,” and I’d think that the gays would prefer that it take on that meaning so incidents such as this should probably not be discouraged.. second, he said “f–k” and the uproar is about saying “f—-t?” That is the true absurdity.

  • Freedom To Put Foot In Mouth

From now on total silence at all events, never speak to anyone ever, no cheering nothing just to be safe and not to offend anyone. Should of said, in my opinion first, your a f ag and f uck you.

  • chat422

Now really Noah should grow a thicker skin and not get angry with the STUPID things Fans say at those games. He was probably also angry because they were losing the game, too!! Celebrities are in a class all by themselves and I wouldn’t want to be in that Glass House. He is a strange looking dude, with his Bun or pony tail. Geeez!!!!!

  • Jon, Montgomery

Well, Men in Miami are h0m0sexuals.

  • Bill

What is said in the heat of the momment in anger doesn’t necessarily reflect the true feelings of a person. I too have yelled things that I really didn’t agree with but anger makes you do stupid things. Buying a ticket doesn’t mean that ignorant fans should be able to yell and do whatever they want. Let’s respect each other!.

  • stucky

he was probably high when he said it

  • myside

He’s not sorry. We all have choices in life. He chose to use the words he did – he’s just sorry others heard it. In the end, who cares? I’m tired of hearing how everyone is offended by what others say, by the american flag, and prayer in school. Suck it up wimps and welcome to america. Get used to it.

    • Truth B Told

I like your comments! What is happening when people can’t say what they want as long as they don’t cause a fire or something similar? I have no problem with Noah saying that to a fan.

  • smooth

NBA David Stern has and always will put $$$$$$ ahead of doing the right thing. Normal working people would be suspended/fired for saying something like this while on the job however the hypocrisy of the NBA continues to talk tough but act cowardly when it comes down to the nitty gritty.

  • Jason C.

I love everyone having their own opinion..especially those that are obviously not intelligent enough to realize the difference between work and their “hero’s”…Go to McDonald’s and order a cheeseburger without pickles. Get pickles. Do you walk up the to the High schooler behind the counter and say, “I said, ‘No pickles jackas*!” and the kid says, “F*** off. You can pick them off.” TELL ME YOU WOULD just say, well, I called him a jackas* so it’s cool. I should just F*** off…really? You’d have the manager giving you a free 6 piece nuggett’s in a heartbreat thoough you were the a**hole for calling him a jackas*… Now how is this different? The working professional is expected to KEEP HIS MOUTH shut. This wasn’t an argument at the park. This was during Noah’s work…Shut it and bear it.
