Cops: Son Ties Up, Beats Elderly Father

WINTHROP HARBOR (CBS) --- Despite his training to be a monk, police say a Winthrop Harbor man tied up his elderly and frail father before allegedly beating him.

Anthony Kelley, 40, tied up his 74-year-old father and attacked him, including using pepper spray, according to Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Marc Bangser. Aiding in the beating was the man's wife and Anthony Kelley's mother, Diane Kelley, 63, Bangser said.

The Kelleys, of the 11000 block of Adams Avenue, were ordered held Wednesday in Lake County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond apiece by Judge Raymond Collins.

The Kelleys were arrested in the early morning hours of May 23, according to Bangser. The two were upset with the elderly man while they were changing his diaper, so they beat him and tied him to the bed with duct tape, Bangser said.

The pair has been charged with aggravated battery, which is a Class 3 felony punishable two to five years in prison. They were also each charged with unlawful restraint, a Class 4 felony punishable one to three years in prison.

The 74-year-old man was treated at Vista East Medical Center, Waukegan. An update on his medical condition was not immediately available.

At this bond hearing, Anthony Kelley told Collins he had trained to be a Russian monk.

The Kelleys are due back in court June 2.
