Runner Dies During Corporate Challenge Run

UPDATED: 5/27/2011 12:35 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A northwest suburban man who worked for a Loop insurance brokerage died Thursday, after he collapsed during a charity race in Grant Park.

Ralph Nosal, of Elk Grove Village, collapsed near Columbus and Lake Shore Drive according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Nosal -- who police said was 61 -- was running in the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge when he collapsed, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said.

Emergency crews took him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

Nosal was a managing director for global insurance brokerage firm Marsh Inc. and worked in their Loop office at 500 W. Monroe, according to Dan Prince, global director of marketing and communications for Marsh.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague Ralph Nosal,'' Prince said.

"Ralph was a wonderful father, friend and leader within our organization for over 31 years. His leadership, camaraderie and wit will be greatly missed," he said. "This is a tragic loss."

The 30th annual, 3 1/2-mile run started just after 7 p.m. Thursday in Grant Park and included more than 20,000 entrants from 635 area companies, according to the event's website.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
