Hammond Man Killed In High-Speed Wreck

HAMMOND, Ind. (CBS) -- A 31-year-old Hammond, Ind. man died Sunday morning after the vehicle he was driving slammed into two buildings.

The man was traveling on Kennedy Avenue at the time of the 6:45 a.m. accident and was being followed by his roommate in another vehicle, Hammond, Ind. Police Lt. Richard Hoyda said.

Witnesses told police the vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed when the lead car struck an apartment building and then a union hall, both in the 6400 block of Kennedy Avenue.

The driver who struck the buildings was transported by ambulance but later pronounced dead. Details weren't available.

No citations have been issued. It's too early to tell whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, Hoyda said.
