Rush Is On To Save Bald Eagle Nest, Eaglets

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A family of bald eagles near the Mooseheart home in Kane County has lost its home--but Mooseheart and wildlife groups are trying to rebuild it.

For two years now, the bald eagle couple has been coming back to the nest on the property of the Mooseheart home for children.

This year, there were two eaglets in the huge nest. And everything was fine.

Until this weekend, Newsradio 780's Steve Miller reports.

"In the storms this weekend, the bald eagle nest on our campus blew down," said Darryl Mellema, a spokesman for Mooseheart.

Mellema says they're working with an animal rehabilitation center to care for the eaglets while the nest is repaired.

"We just hope that they're able to get back into the nest, that the mother and father return to the nest after it's up there," Mellema said. "I know we've got professionals working on this, but nothing is ever guaranteed and the nest has been down there on the ground now and it's always a worry that mother and father won't come back."

Mellema says if that happens, they'll just try to raise the eaglets at the wildlife rehab center.
