Investigators Seek Answers In High School Basketball Player’s Slaying

LYNWOOD, Ill. (CBS) — Nearly a week after the shooting death of a Hillcrest high school basketball player, the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force is now involved in hopes to gathering information that will solve the crime.

As WBBM Newsradio 780’s Mary Frances Bragiel reports, investigators say they had hoped to have someone in custody, at this point, for the shooting death of Ryan Royall, of Country Club Hills.

But after talking with more than 50 witnesses, detectives say they need more information.

The 17-year-old was shot and killed while standing in the parking lot of the Ho Chunk Sports and Expo Center, at 10 Southland Dr. in south suburban Lynwood, just after attending a birthday party.

He was pronounced dead at Franciscan St. Margaret Mary Health Care in Dyer, Ind., and the Lake County, Ind., coroner’s office said he was shot at last once in the back.

Royall, who just finished his junior year at Hillcrest High School, played basketball for the school. The guard and he was seen playing all day Saturday during the Riverside-Brookfield Summer Tournament.

Police say nearly 500 kids attended the party where Royall was killed, and that the shooting does not appear to be gang- or drug-related.

In addition to Royall, a 16-year-old was also shot but survived.

  • Business as usual

The story says it is not gang or drug related. What they don’t say is that it is related to the never ending stupid criminal behavior that is the norm in the black community.

    • NWA

Criminal behavior is not the norm in the African-American community. If you’ve fail to notice, in the last two days the faces of crime in the state of Illinois is reflective of the states diversity, but people like “YOU” would never notice that. Or, should I say “YOU PEOPLE” would never notice that.

  • It's Inevitable

Look at the picture of this kid. Tell me he’s not on the cusp of robbing and committing other crimes. It’s inevitable.

  • Jerome

Who the hell carries a gun to a teenager’s party. Pathetic Loser homies.

This is not a time for anyone to be spewing hate. I am black and unfortunately these shootings and so forth does happen alot in the black communities, but that doesn’t mean that people should come on these blogs and down the victim. Some mother has just lost a child, and it doesn’t matter what race they’re are, the pain is all the same. So, if you all have a little dignity inside of you, save your comments for the dinner table. Please don’t come on here with all of that hate. How are we supposed to get ahead as a human race, if ignorance is still rampant? Remember this, a real man speaks his words face to face, a coward WILL always hide behind his. God bless everyone! May that young man rest in peace!
