Man Using Lighter To Search Under Mattress Sparks Extra-Alarm Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man using a lighter to look under his mattress accidentally sparked an extra-alarm fire in the Uptown neighborhood early Sunday.

Firefighters responded to a fire at 915 W. Wilson Av. at 4:45 a.m. Sunday, and a 2-11 alarm and an EMS Plan 1 response were called about 15 minutes later, accordng to Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

The fire started on the third floor of the six-story apartment building when a man was using a lighter to help him see while looking for something under a mattress, Langford said.

The man was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, according to Langford.

Two others were treated at the scene, Langford said. The fire was put out by 5:30 a.m.
