Emanuel Invites Wrong First-Grader To Signing Of Education Bill

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Rahm Emanuel's special student guest for a bill signing on education reform turned out to be the wrong kid.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Nancy Harty reports, the precocious first grader's question about a longer school day seemed to delight Mayor Emanuel, during a visit to South Loop Elementary School, 1212 S. Plymouth Ct.

A picture of the Mayor Emanuel kissing the child on the head even made it into the Chicago Sun-Times.

So when it came time to sign the legislation, the Sun-Times reports, he invited a little girl from the class named Rei Kong, credited her with asking the question, and watched as Gov. Pat Quinn gave her a commemorative pen.

But it wasn't Rei Kong who asked the question, the Sun-Times reports It was Parker Rasmussen.

Parker's mother, Marla Vender Rasmussen, told the newspaper she was disappointed. But Mayor Emanuel later called Parker up personally and apologized for the mixup, saying he had spoken to a lot of kids that day.
