NBC Apologizes For Omission In Pledge Of Allegiance Before U.S. Open

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — An omission in the Pledge of Allegiance had NBC issuing an on-air apology Sunday during the U.S. Open.

The network opened its broadcast with a montage that included children reciting the pledge, but the words “under God” and “indivisible” were omitted.

The backlash on social media was quick and harsh, with some tweets calling for a boycott of NBC.

“We began our coverage of this final round just about three hours ago, and when we did it was our intent to begin the coverage of this U.S. Open championship with a feature that captured the patriotism of our national championship being held in our nation’s capital for the third time,” announcer Dan Hicks told viewers. “Regrettably, a portion of the Pledge of Allegiance that was in that feature was edited out. It was not done to upset anyone, and we’d like to apologize to those of you who were offended by it.”

    Boycott nbc not GOD

  • Erik

I don’t see the problem with this. “Under God” wasn’t even an original part of the pledge, it was added in the 50s.

    • Joe

Of course you don’t see the problem with this, you probably don’t believe in God.

      • Erik

Well of course I don’t. But facts are facts. The phrase “Under God’ was added in 1954 during the McCarthy era.

All the idiots up in arms over this should realize the fact that, if they were really intentionally trying to exclude “Under God”, they probably wouldn’t have also excluded “indivisible”.

But by all means, continue to get your panties in a bunch. All the more lulz for me!

  • Fran

They knew exactly what they were doing and they should be ashamed of themeslves.

  • Brian

Who cares.. just remove the under god and nobody would remember it in 10 days.

  • Crazy Nazey

Hey, how about not having the pledge of allegiance in the broadcast at all? It’s just an example of forced, synthetic patriotism. Using a country club driven, historically racist and exclusionary institution like golf to represent what it means to be American in their introduction is just silly.

  • Haarm

Hey! How about saying it as written with “under God”. And apologize if it offends anybody. Best yet – don’t apologize. No need to.

  • G Bray

Your network makes me sick. What an utterly disgusting insult to our country, the patriots who died for America and untold generations who grew up pledging allegiance to the freedoms we enjoy. What a stupid decission. With hundreds of stations to watch, it will be a cold day in hell before NBC ever comes in to our home again.

  • Right

That was a poor decision by nbc. I’ve wondred about that network before.

  • BHC

Whoever made the decision to cut out “Under God, indivisible” from the Pledge of Allegiance should be sentenced to do some community work hours in a VA Hospital and face those brave men and women who fought to keep our country free. Ask how many of them prayed to God to keep them safe while defending our freedoms. Our household is boycotting NBC.

Haha, the people getting their panties in a bunch over this have supplied me with my recommended daily allowance of lulz. Thanks all!
