Safety Group Welcomes Drop-Side Crib Ban

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A local child safety advocacy group is celebrating the national ban on the sale of drop-side cribs that took effect yesterday.

Kids in Danger was founded in 1998 by the parents of 16-month-old Danny Keysar, who was killed after a portable crib collapsed on him at his Chicago childcare giver's home.

Executive Director Nancy Cowles says they're so relieved the ban was finally enacted and are thinking of Danny and the others who have died.

Drop-side cribs can no longer sold in stores, at garage sales, online or even donated to charity.

Childcare centers and hotels have until next year to get rid of them.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission informed crib manufacturers and retailers of the change over a year ago.

Cowles says their work is not done: They are still pushing for safer portable cribs and they're watching sites like eBay for illegal sales.
