Man Due In Court In Murder Of Girlfriend's 18-Month-Old Son

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 23-year-old South Side man is expected in bond court Thursday, accused of killing his girlfriend's 18-month-old son.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Steve Miller reports, authorities say the little boy, Adonis Bright, died of multiple injuries – including a ruptured bowel, fractured ribs, head trauma and bruises on his face, back and chest.

At noon Thursday, his mother's boyfriend, Tinnell Smith, of the 4800 block of South Calumet Avenue, will appear in bond court in the Cook County Criminal Courthouse, in charges of first-degree murder.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services says it investigated allegations of abuse against Adonis' mother last year, but decided they were unfounded. The department then started a new investigation against the mother in April.

A DCFS spokesman says there is another child in the family - an infant - who has been placed in foster care.
