Robbery Victim Shot Trying To Grab Suspect's Gun

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man drove himself to the hospital late Sunday after he was shot while grabbing the gun from a man who was trying to rob him on the South Side.

A 33-year-old man was parked in a vehicle in the 7100 block of South Wentworth Avenue about 11:15 p.m. Sunday when a man approached with a handgun and demanded money, according to police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.

The gunman opened fire when the man in the car reached for the weapon, police said.

The gunman then fled the scene and the man in the vehicle -- who was shot in the forearm -- drove himself to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition early Monday, according to police.

No one was in custody early Monday, police said.

Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.
