Raging Fire Engulfs Indiana Horse Barn

SCHERERVILLE, Ind. (CBS) -- The cause of a raging fire at a horse barn in Schererville, Ind., remains a mystery Friday morning.

The fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the barn, located in the 7800 block of Cline Avenue. Flames swept through several buildings on the property.

Firefighters and farm workers were able to rescue at least a dozen horses from the barn as the flames overtook it. The silo and other buildings were also destroyed.

The fire was so intense, it could be seen for miles around.

"I live a couple towns over, and I could see the smoke covering the whole sky," said Jarrett Stickel of St. John, Ind.

The fire was also visible from nearby Rohrman Park, where residents took a break from Little League games to get a look at the fire. Traffic was backed up along Rohrman Road and 85th Avenue as portions of Cline Avenue were closed to traffic by police.

There were no reports of injuries in the fire.

The Northwest Indiana Post-Tribune contributed to this report, via the Sun-Times Media Wire.
