Violent Crime Down, Motor Vehicle Theft, Burglary And Arsons Up

UPDATED 07/07/11 7:26 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Police Supt. Garry McCarthy says summer can present unique challenges, but despite that, crime stats are showing a different picture.

As WBBM Newsradio 780’s Michele Fiore reports, Numbers through the end of June show a decrease in homicide, aggravated assault and battery, and criminal sexual assault. This is the 30th consecutive month to see a decrease in violent and overall crime, police said.

Murders are down 14.4 percent, and through the end of June, there have been 31 fewer homicides this year than the same time frame last year, according to a police News Affairs release.

More than half of the 25 districts showed decreases in their homicide numbers and most of those districts showed double or triple digit reductions.

The release said the broader violent crime statistics showed across the board decreases in every category of violent crime. Aggravated batteries — which include shootings — dropped by 14.2 percent, while aggravated assault and robbery declined by 13.6 and 3.9 percent, respectively. Criminal sexual assaults were down slightly, declining by 1.7 percent.

Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said in the release that these decreases in violent crime are an encouraging start to what is traditionally a busy time of year for police.

“The summer months can present unique challenges for the Department,” McCarthy said in the release. “The hard-working men and women of the Chicago Police Department have done a tremendous job responding to those challenges, and these numbers are a testament to their dedication.”

While property crime overall was down 2.9 percent, there were increases in three categories of property crime. Burglary and arson increased by 0.2 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively while motor vehicle theft was up 17.4 percent, according to the release.

Incidents of theft dropped by 8.8 percent and property crime overall continued its downward trend of recent months.

Chicago Police continue to work aggressively to combat these increases in property crime categories, particularly motor vehicle theft, the release said.

Within the last month, police shut down two “chop shops” operating on the West Side. In early June, officers executed a search warrant on a West Side warehouse that led to the recovery of two confirmed stolen vehicles as well as 29 additional vehicles in various stages of dismantling, the release said.

Working with members of the Northeast Metro Auto Theft Task Force and other agencies, two suspects were arrested and charged in connection with the search warrant, the release said.

Earlier this week police concluded a four month investigation dubbed Operation “Pay Back” in which four suspects were charged for their role in an active auto theft ring operating citywide, the release said.

The following statistics are through the end of June:

Violent Index Crime is down 8.9 percent

— Homicide – down 14.4 percent
— Criminal Sexual Assault – down 1.7 percent
— Robbery – down 3.9 percent
— Aggravated Assault – down 13.6 percent
— Aggravated Battery – down 14.2 percent

Property Index Crime is down 2.9 percent

— Theft – down 8.8 percent
— Burglary – up 0.2 percent
— Motor Vehicle Theft – up 17.4 percent
— Arson – up 0.4 percent

Overall crime was down 4.2 percent compared to crime numbers through June of 2010.

I guess the cops and Rahm don’t read the CBS blogs, or maybe somebody is lying here. Conclusion: The big lie continues:

In response to Todd Feurer on July 10, 2011 at 10:21 am:

Four men have been killed and at least another 12 people wounded in acts of violence in Chicago this weekend. Among those wounded in shootings Saturday are a 7-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl.

The weekend is not over, numbers could double.

Again racism, ignorance, and insensitivity appears to abound. Everyone is “running a mock”, not just Blacks. Again, crime is a symptom of a problem or problems.

    • Jermain Williams

It seems you haven’t kept up with crime statistics in Chicago. Black homies make up over 90% of violent crime. That means the statement,”blacks running a mock”, is an accurate statement. There is no racism about it.

Those books are cooked, there is no way crime is going down at all. Don’t these people watch the news. I guess the people of Chicago can be easily fooled into a false sense of security. You want to be safe then stay out of Chicago. (this is for suburbanites). Chicago residents please stay there, the city is good for you.

  • Mr. Justice

Someone is definitely cooking the books. Always remember, figures never lie, BUT those who do the figuring do lie.

    • Raymond Prudente

Computers do not make errors and error occurred when software is faulty. Persons crimes are counted for each individual victim, property crimes are counted per incident regardless of the number of actual victims involved. The Bureau of Justice Statistics indicated that drug and felony cases has been increasing. manipulated crime statistics is questionable problematic data or simple misunderstanding. But I believe CPD’s records unit are trained and highly professional.

  • Raymond Prudente

When police fudges their crime statistic it undermines the nobility of the policing profession. It is easy to reduce crime with the stroke of a pen but It can affect police officer with sometimes tragic results. And lead to other crimes being eliminated. Police officers are, after all, human like the rest of us who failed to pursue other crimes and suspects. How about other reported crimes selectively and negligently ignored by law enforcement?

    • GetAClue

Ask the cops on the street if crime is on the decrease. The brass could care less about the nobility of the profession as they are in it for their politically appointed lives. Do you wonder why the FBI refuses to validate Chicago’s crime statistics? Because they are bunk!

      • NWA

It’s not Chicago it’s the state that the FBI has a problem with. The FBI has to count murders, that’s something the state can’t hide but, violent crime is a different story. What Cook County considers to be a violent crime involves name calling. But, murder is murder and the FBI has to count that.

      • Mr. Justice

@ GetAClue….You are correct. The FBI does refuse to validate Chicago’s crime statistics.

  • Centurion

Remember, 5 are dead in weekend violence. Thats the 5 they are telling you about.

And please do not forget, violent crime is non existent, you no longer have to lock your doors at night, you can walk down the street with your wallet in your hands, and please do feel free to leave your children with strangers…YOU READ IT HERE…SO IT MUST BE TRUE

  • justforchuckles

“Remember, 5 are dead in weekend violence. Thats the 5 they are telling you about.”Really? You people are loons. “Don’t they watch the news.” Because it makes the news means what? There is more of it? Sit back and think about this. Twenty years ago Bucktown, Edgewater, Lakeview East, South Loop, the Loop after 5:00pm, essentially anything South of 90 in the city was no go. A couple of novel and new events take place in places there not supposed to and things have increased? No, some transplants from Iowa, the 847, and the 630 have merely learned that yes in fact living in x, y, z, and being middle class does not grant immunity from the social ills of city life and they actually have skin in the game. Bitter pill? Welcome to adulthood. Next.

    • a_lime_mila

Hey justforchuckles, thanks for trying to say something reasonable on one of these Tribune threads. Unfortunately, it’s hard to stay grounded in reality on here. The political culture that we live in is already paranoid, and the internet just ramps it all up. Paranoia begets paranoia begets… I don’t know, but maybe something that could explain the genuinely disturbing stuff that gets expressed on here. Soon, the really racist thoughts start to seem normal. At that point, it’s way too late to challenge the more universally accepted insanity.

Consider this, Tribune readers: maybe, just maybe, “they” are not always and forever deceiving you.

Consider this: maybe, just maybe, you end up selecting for an increasingly narrow selection of viewpoints until finally there’s no one but borderline schizophrenic, virulently racist ultraconservatives from Dupage County.

You’re just a bunch of idealists. You all should go back to Berkeley on something, you know that?

  • tiredofchicago

Very stupid comment…Instead of being a racist, try earning a GED!

    • Jake Anderson

@tired, Just because someone is not complimentary toward the black community, doesn’t make them a racist. The actions of the young blacks in this city speak for themselves.
