Hahn: White Sox Won’t Rush Viciedo

There have been a few suggestions for ways to cure the White Sox anemic offense. The leading suggesting from fans has been to promote power-hitting prospect Dayan Viciedo. The organization, however, is taking a much more patient approach.

“It’s a combination of things,” White Sox’s assistant general manager Rick Hahn said on Hit and Run when talking about when Viciedo would be called up. “It’s one, if he’s going to be here he’s going to have to play. And two, if he’s going to be here, we have to confident that he’s going to play at a level that’s clearly going to make us better. And not just the production we’re getting out of that specific spot, but the guys around him and how we line up defensively.”

White Sox fans understand that the team won’t promote him just to have him sit on the bench or make the occasional spot-start. But fans see his production in Triple-A (.325 BA, 16 HR, 62 RBI) and wonder what more he needs to do.

From listening to Hahn, there’s not much more he can do, it’s just a matter of finding the right time and not rushing the 22-year-old.

“Look, he’s done absolutely marvelously,” Hahn said. “In fact, he’s even done better in the last three or four weeks since this sort of buzz for people wanting him up here began. He’s actually shown a little more plate discipline in the past few weeks. He’s gotten even better as a defender and an outfielder.

“When he gets here we do think he’s going to be an impact guy. That being said, he is 22 years old. If he had grown up in the states, he’d be a year out of the draft, in all probability. To expect that a 22-year-old kid would come up here and, you know, essentially save the season or turn around the offense single handily, is an awful lot to put on him.”
