A short time later, police spotted a vehicle and four people matching the description near train tracks at 95th and Wood Streets, Chicago Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said. The suspect, who was holding a pistol, took off running when officers tried to talk to him, he said.

Police chased the suspect across the train tracks and into an alley, ordering him to drop the weapon, Camden said. The officer fired when the man turned to face police with the weapon still in his hand, he said.

The man, Robert Bassie, 23, of the 9700 block of South Charles Street, was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 11:48 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The three other people with the suspect ran in different directions and are not in police custody early Tuesday, Camden said.

Police and The Independent Police Review Authority are investigating.
