17-Year-Old Dies In Police Custody

CHICAGO (STMW) – A 17-year-old boy arrested for possession of heroin died in police custody Wednesday morning.

The teen — identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office as 17-year-old Mark Haynie — was arrested Tuesday night in the 900 block of north Trumbull Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien said.

Haynie was being held at the Harrison District police station when he was found unresponsive at 5:15 a.m.

Police said he was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where the medical examiner’s office said he was pronounced dead at 5:49 a.m.

An autopsy on Haynie, of the 1000 block of North St. Louis Ave., is scheduled for Thursday, the medical examiner’s office said.

Harrison ARea detectives are investigating.

I love to know about Barbecue!! Its my passion….

  • tom Sharp

I’m sure his momma is telling everyone her “… baby didn’t do no crime,” and dialing up a bevy of lawyers right now!

    • Lee

And I’m sure you were on the west side buying your drugs from him then driving back to the suburbs complining about those black people in that neighborhood.

  • righttrack

It is medically possible to be “scared to death”. Maybe the fear of his parent(s) finding out about his arrest caused his demise.

  • Lyndia

Lee, how do you know what goes on on the west side? You are so right! I have seen that many times myself. They have stickers from Downers Grove, Cicero, Oak Park, Niles, Skokie, Berwyn, Arlington Heights, Westmont, you name it and each suburb is well represented. However,selling/using drugs is wrong. Is not the Harrison District, the old Fillmore Station. Many blacks went into that station and came out dead, especially in the 50’s and 60’s. Isn’t this the same station that the KKK was having their meeting in?

    • Tom

Downers Grove does not issue vehicle stickers so you could not possibly have seen one. A blatant error/lie like that calls into question any of the other “facts” in your comment.

  • Tim

Simple. Kid from the suburbs goes to the west side to buy smack gets caught with enough to get arrested for but eats some then overdose. Ta da

    • NWA

What if the po po forced him to eat the drugs? Ta da!

Hi, I’ve known “Lil Mark” most of his life and his death has saddened me terribly. He and my nephew had been the best of friends since grade school. Lil Mark was very close to our family, especially the other young boys (men) in the family. The five of them, my nephew, three cousins and 1 other neighborhood friend were always hanging out together at the other ones’ house. Of course, Lil Mark did bad things that boys sometimes do at that age. Sometimes kids experience different things good or bad in their teen age years but then they mature away from those things. Unfortunately, he passed before he could grow and mature into the find young man his Mom would have wanted him to become. Lil Mark had his short comings but he was also a sweet, respectable kid with a good heart!! I do not what happened to him for sure but I do know that no one deserves to die because they did a few bad things in their life. My heart and prayers goes out to his mom, father, grandfather, little brother, sisters, my nephew and cousins and everyone else who loves (ed) him. May you have Peace now Lil Mark!! Love, Kay Kay
