3 Found Dead In Downstate House Destroyed By Fire

UPDATED 07/15/11 6:30 a.m.

GRAND RIDGE, Ill. (CBS) – A woman and her two small children are dead after a fire in their LaSalle County home on Thursday.

As WBBM Newsradio 780’s Michele Fiore reports, the woman’s husband, Gary Shepard, was first on the scene. But flames shooting from their home in rural Grand Ridge, Ill., just south of Ottawa, kept him from getting inside, so he called for help.

LaSalle County sheriff Thomas Templeton says firefighters discovered three people inside – Shepard’s wife and their two young sons.

The three bodies were together in an upstairs bedroom.

An autopsy is planned for later Friday.

The state fire marshal and the sheriff’s office are investigating the fire.
