CHICAGO (WBBM) – It was a full house at Chicago Police headquarters as Garry McCarthy was sworn in as Chicago’s newest police superintendent.

Command staff and others who attended cheered when McCarthy completed his oath. He returned the compliment, but issued a challenge.

“I will have your backs,” he said. “And I promise you that I’m going to lead from the front, and therefore I expect that you will have my back also.”

Former Chicago Police Supts. James O’Grady, Terry Hillard, Matt Rodriguez, Phil Cline and Jody Weis attended the ceremony. Also on hand was New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who had McCarthy on his command staff during his first tour as commissioner.

McCarthy was most recently police chief in Newark, N.J.

Mayor Emanuel says he is pleased to have “two beat cops” at the top of the department.

Deputy Supt. Al Wysinger also took an oath, administered, as was McCarthy’s, by Cook County Circuit Court Chief Judge Tim Evans.
