Supporters Say They Won't Back Obama If He Allows Entitlement Cuts

CHICAGO (CBS) -- More than 200,000 people across the country say they will not support President Barack Obama in his run for 2012 based on some of the proposals coming out of the debt ceiling talks.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Mary Frances Bragiel reports, members of Progressive Change Campaign Committee say if President Obama allows cuts to go forward to Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security benefits, they simply will not volunteer their time or donate money to his 2012 re-election campaign.

"When I heard he was willing to cut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, he signaled to be that my future is bleak," said Donna Conroy of Chicago.

Conroy was a volunteer foot soldier during Obama's first campaign. Her signature is one of 200,000 delivered to the Obama campaign headquarters today.

Mary Ellen Croteau says forget about giving time or money. She has no plans to vote for Obama if the cuts come to fruition.

"If this is just a giveaway on the table like everything else has been, he has lost my support completely," she said.

A representative of the campaign issued a statement that reads in part, "President Obama was elected to take on big challenges and he is engaged in promoting a balanced approach to reducing the deficit."
