Your Chicago: Davenport’s On Karaoke Night

CHICAGO (CBS) — Meet Alma Mendoza, a Chicago personal banker … and a karaoke queen by night.

Davenport’s Piano Bar in Wicker Park is her home away from home.

“I moved to the neighborhood because of this bar,” she tells CBS 2’s Rob Johnson.

For Alma and her friends, karaoke is their passion. Alma is much more than a paying customer at Davenport’s. She organizes karaoke night.

“I love to hear people sing. That’s my niche — I want to make someone a star.”

Alma invited Johnson to hang out during a night of karaoke. The pair performed a duet.

Davenport’s is open every night of the week except Tuesdays. Karaoke with Alma is on Friday nights at 10:30 p.m.

  • out of work performer sick of this garbage taking OUR jobs away!!!

Why can’t you report on when REAL SINGERS perform therei instead of this Karaoke bulls**t?
Do you know how those of us who spend YEARS perfecting our art…years of PRACTICE of trial and error of self-belief and perserverence feel when no talents attempt to do it? How would your news casters who appear on your station to see someone do the news who had absolutely NO TALENT to do it? How does a gormet chef or an accomplished athlete feel when he sees someone who couldn’t do it if they tried? It may be fun to you but KAROAKE is a BAD JOKE to us pros!!!! I don’t care if you like my opinion or not…..KARAOKE and for that matter DEE-JAYS SUCK!!!!!! neither takes ANY talent.

Well, shucks. There’s usually about 12 live shows at Davenport’s every week between the two rooms, all employing real live musicians, and just one night of karaoke in one of them. And all of those karaoke tracks were made by real live musicians – playing for pay. You’re barking up the wrong tree. Heck, you’re not even near a tree.

If you are that bitter, its time you try something new, you obviously suck if you are putting down people who are doing this for fun. If you aren’t getting paid its because you suck not because of karaoke or dee-jays.
