Passenger Killed When Car Rams Police Vehicle On West Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A passenger was killed Tuesday evening when a vehicle crashed into a police squad car on the city's West Side.

The car was headed south on Central Avenue at Madison Street just before 8 p.m., when its driver ran a red light and slammed into a police squad car. The squad car was heading east on Madison Street, and had the green light, police said.

A woman in the passenger seat was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where she was pronounced dead, police said. She is identified as Geanne Ortega, 55, of the 3100 block of North Nordica Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Two police officers were also hospitalized at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The offending driver, Jessica Ortega, 28, of the 3700 block of North Nordica Avenue, was taken to Stroger Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. She was also ticketed for failure to reduce speed, disobeying a red light, damage to city property, and having expired license plates, no driver's license and no insurance.
