South Side Residents Warned Of Nighttime Home Burglaries

UPDATED 07/28/11 8 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) - Police are warning South Side residents that at least three homes have been burglarized this week, while the occupants of those homes were fast asleep.

Police say the burglaries happened between Monday and Wednesday in and around the Brainerd neighborhood between 87th Street on the north and 95th Street on the south, and between Ashland Avenue on the east and Western Avenue on the west.

The burglars have gotten into the homes by way of locked windows and doors, and have avoided contact with sleeping residents as they make off with their loot, police say.

Police do not have an offender description, but ask area residents to be aware of the situation and alert neighbors to the crimes. If possible, secure obscured windows and doors, and remove shrubs that block window views, police said.

If confronted by a nurglar, police advise complying with demands and allowing them to leave without confrontation. Call 911 and provide a detailed description of the offenders, including a vehicle description and license plate information.

Anyone with information should call detectives at (312) 747-8273 or e-mail tips to area2tipline@chicagopolice.org.
