CHICAGO (CBS) – A 22-year-old man was behind bars on Sunday after allegedly shooting and killing two people on Friday and then engaging in a shootout with Chicago police officers who witnessed the murders.

David Russell, of the 9500 block of South Calumet Avenue, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Russell was ordered held without bond Sunday afternoon, according to a court clerk. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 30 in Violence Court.

Russell allegedly walked up to a man on the street at 82nd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue on Friday and shot him and then a woman who was standing next to him.

The woman, identified as Moneet Baker, 22, was pronounced dead at 6:32 p.m. Friday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Kenneth Taylor, 24, was pronounced dead at 4 p.m. Friday at Jackson Park Hospital.

Three police officers happened to be nearby and witnessed the shooting, police said.

After the shooting, the officers then exchanged fire with the gunman, who got into a pickup truck with another person and fled the scene, Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said on Friday

The exchange of gunfire between the police and the suspect continued during the car chase and the suspect crashed the truck about a block away.

There was more gunfire exchanged between suspect and police and then the truck started going again for another several blocks and then stopped near 86th Street and Ingleside Avenue. Police arrested the gunman and the driver of the vehicle.

Officials said that no one was injured in the exchange of gunfire between police and the suspects.

Russell was charged with the shooting on Sunday. The other suspect was released without charges, according to police.
