The 22-year-old victim said a man approached her from behind, placed his hand over her mouth, told her he had a weapon and pulled her to the ground. Then he sexually assaulted her and took her cell phone, the Tuesday alert from Belmont Area detectives said.

The offender was last seen riding a bike south on Southport Avenue. He is Hispanic, between 25 and 35, 5 feet 7 inches tall and 170 pounds, the alert said. He has dark brown hair and was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with a design in the front and cargo-style khaki colored shorts.

Police are warning nearby residents to be aware of the situation and to alert neighbors. If possible, don't walk alone and stay in well lit areas.

Police also remind people that cell phones may be a distraction to their safety.

Anyone with information about the sexual assault and robbery is asked to call detectives at (312) 744-8261.
