CHICAGO (CBS) — A cab driver from Richton Park has been ticketed for hitting two little girls on the Magnificent Mile over the weekend.

Cab driver Friday Ekon, 65, of the 20000 block of Butterfield Road in Richton Park, was issued two tickets for striking a pedestrian in the roadway.

As WBBM Newsradio’s Mary Frances Bragiel reports, police say Ekon was driving his cab south on Michigan Avenue when he hit two children as they were trying to cross the street after exiting a vehicle just after 5 p.m. Sunday.

The girls, ages 6 and 8, were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. One suffered a broken femur, while the other, according to investigators, has a bruised abdomen.

The cab driver was also taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital to be checked out, police said.

The Sun-Times Media Wire contributed to this report.

This is a perfect example of why so many people leave the scene of a pedestrian accident. Someone walks out in front of your car, it’s your fault. The pedestrian doesn’t even have to pay for the damage they caused to your vehicle.

The article doesnt say the girls jaywalked across the street. They could have been at the crosswalk.

Either way, pedestrians are ALWAYS at risk when crossing the street downtown. You have impatient drivers and crowded conditions that add to the overall danger.

In my opinion, Cabbies are the most dangerous drivers in the city.

They only thing worse than a cabbie with a fare is a cabbie looking for a fare!

Wow, I can’t believe that the adult that was helping the 6 and 8 year old children across the street was unharmed…must be a miracle! I’m sure it couldn’t have been poor irresponsible parenting because I would expect child services to arrest the parent(s) then and that making the news.

Was there an adult with the children or were they crossing this busy street by themselves? I agree that cabbies are the worse drivers in Illinois, second only to unlicensed ILLEGALS driving landscape vehicles. If there were no adults looking after these children as they crossed the street, someone needs to be held responsible and charged. Hopefully the girls will be ok and their injuries not too serious. I would keep them away from downtown Chicago; it’s too dangerous for them.

This is really very shocking news, police should have to take some strong steps against this criminal.
