Updated 8/13/11 2:03 p.m.

CHICAGO (STMW) - A North Side man who was standing on the street with his wife was shot dead and two members of his wife's family were wounded early Saturday in the West Chatham neighborhood, police said.

The shooting occurred at 1:23 a.m. at 87th Street and South Princeton Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines.

The man killed, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as 28-year-old Rick Szewka, was standing on the street in the 8700 block of South Princeton Ave. with his wife and they were visiting members of his wife's family when the attack occurred, according to Gresham District police Lt. John Francis.

A dark-colored Buick Century drove past and someone inside it opened fire with an unidentified type of gun and shot Szewka in the chest and two women -- 37 and 23 -- in the legs, according to the lieutenant.

Szewka, of the 4600 block of North Kimball Ave., was taken to Roseland Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:10 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office. An autopsy Saturday determined Szewka died of a gunshot wound to the back and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office.

The older woman was shot eight times – five times in the lower left leg, twice in the right leg and once in the right heel while the 23-year-old woman was shot in the right leg, according to the lieutenant who said they were in "stable" condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Szewka's wife, who is in her 20s and who also lives at the Kimball address, was not hurt.

Francis said it was not known what precipitated the shooting and said man killed did not have a criminal history

After the attack, five or six other family members were arrested during a "big disturbance,'' the lieutenant said.

They were charged with misdemeanor mob action, battery to the police and refusing to move away from the crime scene, according to Francis. Their names were not immediately available.

Calumet Area detectives are invsestigating.
