Cab Fatally Strikes Woman, 86, On Sheridan Road

UPDATED 08/24/11 5:54 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) - An 86-year-old woman has died after a cab struck her Monday morning while she crossed busy Sheridan Road in East Lakeview.

The woman -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as Coral Kier, 86, -- was fatally struck by a cab at 10:56 a.m. Monday in the 3100 block of North Sheridan Road, just south of Belmont Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said.

The woman was walking south on Sheridan Road when a cab traveling west on Briar Place struck her in the crosswalk as the driver attempted to make a left turn, O'Brien said.

Kier, of the 3500 block of North Lake Shore Drive, was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, the medical examiner's office said. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

The cab driver -- 40-year-old Mohammed Ahmed, of Chicago -- was ticketed for failure to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk and failure to use due care for a pedestrian.

The stretch of Sheridan Road where the crash happened runs only from Diversey Parkway to Belmont Avenue. All seven intersections on the stretch are signaled, but the road is regularly loaded with fast-moving automotive traffic heading to and from Lake Shore Drive.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
