Man Charged In Assault Of Elderly Relative

BRIDGEVIEW (CBS) -- A 34-year-old south suburban man is being held on $350,000 bond for allegedly assaulting an elderly relative and then hijacking her vehicle.

Christopher Colby, 34, of Homer Glen, is charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, a Class X felony, and robbery for the recent assault of a 79-year-old woman inside her Orland Park home, a release from the Cook County Sheriff's office said.

Last Thursday morning, Colby attempted to enter the woman's home in the 15700 block of South 113th Avenue, but was denied entry, the release said. As the victim went to call police, Colby tore a screen off a bedroom window and climbed in, then grabbed the victim's car keys and purse.

When she attempted to stop him, he shoved her back and fled with the vehicle, the release said. Responding sheriff's officers could not locate Colby or the vehicle, but several hours later, Colby contacted the victim and said he would return the vehicle.

Officers were waiting for him at the home and took him into custody without incident when he arrived with the vehicle. The relationship between Colby and the victim was not disclosed.

Colby is a paroled felon with a lengthy criminal history, including narcotics-related charges, according to the sheriff's office.

Colby remains in Cook County Jail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Sept. 14 at the Bridgeview courthouse.
