Gutierrez Pleased, Hopeful About Change In Deportation Policy

UPDATED 08/30/11 12:31 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) — U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) has launched a new push to inform immigrants about new deportation rules.

As CBS 2’s Mike Puccinelli reports, Gutierrez has been leading efforts to try to get the Obama administration to soften its stance on illegal immigration.

On Tuesday at the office of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Gutierrez stopped short of declaring victory. But he did argue that the announcement this week of a change to federal deportation policies is an important first step.

WBBM Newsradio Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports Gutierrez said President Obama deserves praise — and re-election — for making the change in his administration’s policies.

The policy change means that 300,000 open deportation cases will be reviewed by immigration panels that will include members of the U.S. Justice and Homeland Security departments.

“After that review from the panel, they will take the high-priority cases – that’s the drug dealers, the gangbangers, the people who cause havoc, and pain, and destruction in our community, and they’ll say, ‘Goodbye!’” Gutierrez said. “And here’s our hope – that the students, and young men and women, will be left behind here in the United States of America.”

The new policy was announced by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano last week. Under the new rules, many illegal immigrants who faced deportation despite having no criminal record will be allowed to stay in the country and apply for work permits.

Republican lawmakers have balked at the plan, with House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) calling it “backdoor amnesty to illegal immigrants.”

Gutierrez has a reply for those comments.

“I say it’s about families. There are 4 million American citizen children. They’re going to be 4 million American citizen adults one day, and what President Barack Obama said, ‘You know what? I really don’t want to prioritize their moms and their dads. I’d rather they stay here and cherish and love,” he said.

The new policy does not have a path to citizenship, but Gutierrez says the fight continues.

      You know it!!!

  • KE

WOW.. but I see your point. And I think you are right about for every illegal that is given a job here in the US, another US citizen loses that chance to be employed.

And the politicians are COMPLETELY wrong about allowing CRIMINALS.(those who knowingly illegal came into the country or refused to leave under the rules)
to remain in the US and keep having babies while theya re here

  • Like clockwork

That young girl standing next to Gutierrez will have 5 kids before she turns 21. The government will then provide free handouts and subsidies for the rest of their lives and of course the taxpayers will be left holding the bill.

And There’s Nothing you can do about it. face it ”GUERO” your days are numbered. You’ll soon be cutting are grass….HA HA HA!

WHat is wrong with you people!!?? There is no way to get rid of immigration completely or to send ALL immigrants back. Its impossible! So instead of complaining about it why not try to find a useful way to keep immigrants here??? They’re not going anywhere. This new bill will send all the bad apples back to their country. So what should we do with the millions already here?? Why not grant them a path to citizenship so that they can pay taxes?? Or better yet charge them a fee to become citizens or atleast residents? Think of all the money that could come from this?? And as for the person who made a comments aboiut the young woman having 5 kids and the govenment supporting them all? Really dude?? C’mon if picking on someone of latin origin just because you are Caucasian or Black makes you feel better about yourself then I feel sorry for you. I have news for everyone the United States is changing very fast. Hispanics are already on the verge of becoming the largest the population Let’s embrace the change that we cannot overpower. History repeats itself need I remind you of slavery?? That was illegal but it happened. The trail of tears with the Native Americans?? The Holocaust with the Jews?? Oppressing a group of people into leaving or doing something that they dont want wont work.

It is possible to deport ALL of them that are here illegaly. It will take an immense operation, but it is possible. Illegal aliens are NOT immigrants, there is a difference. These illegals are dragging down this great country. The time is NOW for politicians to listen to the majority and clean up this country!!!!!!

      • Alma Ponce

Well when that happens I will say you were right. It will be an immense operation but who is going to participate?? Don’t you see how well that turned out for Arizona?? Nationally millions started to boycott them and they had to “revise” their bill. Secure communities failed in Chicago because our Gvernor wouldn’t stand to have immigrants being hauled away for minor traffic violations or getting caught without a license. The majority is the latino population…. And as long as the politicians want a check they will cater to the majority .

  • Jose Rodriguez Matinez Gonzalez Doritos

This is an absolute outrage!! What the hell is our government thinking? This is a step backward. What happened to the will of the majority? What happened to mass deportation? When will our leaders listen to the will of the people? We DO NOT want these s**t illegal Mexicans here, sucking the life out of our system. Every job a bean eater takes is one less job for Americans. They splurge on our limited resources and bring the stink of Mexico with them. The economy is overwhelmed as it is. Schools are over burdened with their kids, unemployment is at all time highs and we the people are sick of it! No Amnesty, Ever! It’s not an accident that Mexico is such a stink a$$ s**t hole, it’s full of stupid Mexicans.!!!.!!!

illegals take jobs from legal citizens and are on public aid. Vote out obama and anyone who supports this.
