JOLIET (STMW) – A northwest suburban man called a person of interest in his wife’s murder died Sunday morning, nine days after police shot him in southwest suburban Lockport.

Jeffrey Ferrigan, 50, Hanover Park, was shot by authorities Aug. 26 in the 300 block of West 16th Street in Lockport and was pronounced dead at 10 a.m. Sunday at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner’s office.

Ferrigan was a person of interest in his wife’s murder when police shot him.

Police responded about 10:45 a.m. Aug. 26 to a home at 5721 Barr Court in Hanover Park to conduct a well-being check and found the body of 40-year-old Jennifer Gustafson, Hanover Park police Deputy Chief Tom Cortese said. The body was found in the lower level of the home, according to a police release.

Police said the woman suffered a severe head injury. An autopsy by the DuPage County Coroner’s office determined Gustafson died from blunt force trauma to the head and the death was ruled a homicide.

Gustafson lived with her husband, Ferrigan, who was not home when officers arrived and was determined to be a person of interest in the murder, the release said.

The U.S. Marshals Service, Cook County Sheriff’s Department and Lockport police helped locate Ferrigan in the 300 block of West 16th Street in Lockport later that day.

Police said Ferrigan was armed with a knife and approached the officers in a threatening manner. Police shot him when he refused to drop the weapon.

Police said he was initially taken to Silver Cross Hospital, where the coroner’s office said he died Sunday. The coroner’s office will perform an autopsy.

Illinois State Police are investigating the police-involved shooting, while Hanover Park police and the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force are investigating Gustafson’s murder.
