The new Mariano’s will also be the first grocery store in Lakeshore East.
The 28-acre Lakeshore East planned development is known for its fashionable high-rises, and a fountain-adorned park located at grade level in an area where most of the surrounding streets are elevated to meet the bridges across the Chicago River. At one time, it was a rail yard for the Illinois Central freight line, and the present-day park was once a nine-hole golf course.
Mariano’s, the local concept for the Roundy’s supermarket chain, opened its first Chicago store last month, at 3350 N. Western Ave. on the former site of the Riverview amusement park.
Mariano’s stores are already in operation at 802 E. Northwest Highway in Arlington Heights, and 1720 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Vernon Hills. Each employs about 450 people.
