Tigers Manager Says He Didn't Change Underwear During Win Streak

OAKLAND, Calif. (CBS) -- You likely wouldn't want to get too close to the pair of underwear Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland presumably finally took off on Thursday.

Before the game against the Oakland Athletics Thursday, Leyland told MLive.com that he would wear the same underwear until the Tigers lost.

"I will wear these underwear until we lose," Leyland was quoted by MLive. "I can tell you that right now. And they will not be washed. And I don't give a (expletive) who knows it."

Leyland has also decided to wear the same baseball socks, and smoke a cigar, every day until the Tigers lose, MLive reported. The baseball socks in question have holes in them, but Leyland has warned Tigers clubhouse manager Jim Schmakel that he had better not throw the socks out, MLive reported.

On Thursday night, the Tigers lost to Oakland 6-1, after a 12-game win streak. The fate of Leyland's underwear in the wake of the loss has not been learned.

But he told Detroit's 97.1 The Ticket that when he puts on fresh undergarments, "That'll be a celebration."

Leyland apparently is not alone in his choice to go crusty when the team is winning. Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon also said before the game Thursday that he had not washed his underwear or socks during the entire win streak, The Ticket reported.
