Indiana Coroner, Troopers Indicted In 2 Federal Probes

HAMMOND, Ind. (CBS) - The U.S. attorney's office has indicted the Lake County coroner and three police officers as part of two separate public corruption investigations.

Coroner Thomas Philpot was indicted for pocketing nearly $25,000. while he was county clerk.

Philpot has paid the money back with interest.

In the other case, three county police officers--Lake County Sgt. Joseph Kumstar and Officers Ronald Slusser and Edward Kabella--are accused of misusing their positions to obtain machine guns and laser sights, then selling them on the Internet for profit.

U.S. attorney David Capp said all three officers have agreed to plead guilty to all counts and have resigned.

"When you sell things like this to anybody on the Internet you have no idea who is going to end up with them." said Capp.
