Man Charged In Deadly Shooting On Old ABLA Homes Site

Updated 09/29/11 - 3:38 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man has been charged in a July shooting that left another man dead, on the former site of the ABLA public housing development on the Near West Side.

Omar Williams, 22, of the 9600 block of South Merrill Avenue, is charged with the murder of Javone Oliphant, also 22, around 11:15 p.m. July 1 in the 1300 block of West Hastings Street, police said.

Williams is also charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, as the gunfire also left a 23-year-old man wounded at the scene. Williams also faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, and is wanted on a parole violation, police said.

Williams was denied bond Thursday afternoon and a preliminary hearing was set for Oct. 18, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin said.

The attack occurred in a parking lot for the ABLA development. The area around the old Chicago Housing Authority project has since been under redevelopment as a mixed-income complex called Roosevelt Square.

Oliphant, of the 5000 block of West Maypole Avenue, was pronounced dead at 12:09 a.m. July 2 at Stroger Hospital of Cook County. An autopsy July 4 determined Oliphant died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office.

The surviving man was shot in both his legs and the buttocks and was treated and released from Stroger Hospital, police said.

The male suspect initially fled the scene following the shooting.
