Man Who Shot, Disabled Chicago Officer Dies Behind Bars

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The man sentenced to 140 years in prison for shooting a former Chicago policeman in 1996 has died behind bars.

George Guirsch was 61 when he fired a shot through the door of his Rogers Park apartment, striking Officer Jim Mullen in the cheek.

Mullen, who was responding to a disturbance call, survived the shooting, but the bullet severed his spinal cord. He would never walk again.

Despite the disability, Mullen, who became known as Chicago's "Comeback Cop," has started businesses, did some television work and even ran for public office.

Mullen told CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine that he is "neither bitter nor angry."

"While Guirsch is dead, my family and I are left to serve the rest of his sentence," he said.
