Construction Worker Killed In Lockport Accident

LOCKPORT, Ill. (CBS) – A 28-year-old construction worker died Friday morning when a dump trunk backed over him in southwest suburban Lockport.

Randy Lehnus of Kankakee was killed in the 9:40 a.m. accident, which occurred in a construction zone along Illinois Route 171 at Fairmont Avenue, state police told CBS 2.

The driver of the dump truck has not been identified, but he has been ticketed for improperly backing up, police said.

A spokesman for the Illinois Department of Transportation said Lehnus was a contracted employee of IDOT and was taking part in a resurfacing project.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident this morning. Safety always is a top priority at the Illinois Department of Transportation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the worker’s family at this time,” the agency said in a news release.

There was a report recently that stated most construction workers were injured by their fellow workers compared to drivers that hit them in construction zones. I wonder if the fines are the same for a fellow worker that causes injury in an accident. Our sympathy goes out to the Lehnus family on their loss.
