Libertyville Hairstylist Swims English Channel

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. (CBS) -- A Libertyville hairstylist has just returned from the adventure of a lifetime – she swam the English Channel at age 28.

As WBBM Newsradio's Michele Fiore reports, it was just two years ago that Aurora Gore was thinking about doing her first triathlon, but knew she needed to get better at swimming.

So, she found a coach - turned out to be a great coach. He inspired her to push herself and reach big.

Her hesitation turned into ambition. She set out to swim across the English Channel with 11 others.

"You generally don't interact with them, so it's not like a marathon or like a triathlon where you have 100-some people starting all at the same time," she said.

Of the 11 people on the channel that day, six turned back.

"Very dark, so you can't even see your hand in front of your face," Gore said. "So that, to me, is kind of comforting, because I don't like to see stuff in the water. I don't want to know what's down there."

While the dark water is comforting, Gore says when the sun went down, that dark was not.

She says what should have been a 21-mile swim came to almost 25 when she got caught in the current.

She did it in 14 hours, 10 minutes.
